Andirons are some of the oldest-known fireplace accessories, dating back to hearths and homes of the sixteenth century. Originally created to support burning logs, the design of the andirons quickly became a dramatic aesthetic touch to the fireplace. Though some homeowners have replaced andirons with a fireplace grate, we think that andirons lend any fireplace an old-world, vintage touch, while maintaining the functionality that made them popular in the first place.
Fireplace Andirons originated in France, where they were called "Chenets". They were wrought iron supports that held the firewood in place. Later, once burning coal became prevalent, andirons became decorative. Today, andirons are still mainly decorative as they add unique character to the fireplace.
