| The word arbor actually derives its name from a mix of the Old French “erbier”, meaning "garden", and the Latin word for “tree.” The coincidental similarity in spelling between the Latin word and the French word led writers of English to exploit the connection and use "arbor" as the spelling for the trellising structures that grace our gardens, such as the traditional Lattice Arbor. An arbor signifies a leafy, shady recess formed by trees, tree branches, shrubs, etc. An arbor is traditionally used as a shaded sitting place in a garden.
