- What is the difference between an overlap and inside fit?
A fireplace door that is installed as an overlap fit will be mounted to the face of the fireplace. Part of the door will overlap onto the face. A fireplace door that is installed an inside fit will be mounted inside the opening. It can be flush with the face or recessed inside the opening. - Which is best for my application?
A door installed as an overlap fit is easier to install than an inside fit, making it the preferred method of installation. A fireplace that has a smooth face (brick, marble, tile) is ideal for an overlap fit fireplace glass door. However, there are instances when an inside fit is recommended. If you have a fireplace that has a rough or jagged face (stone, for example), an inside fit is preferred because an overlap fit door will not rest flush against the fireplace. In the case of an inside fit, the door will have to be made a bit smaller than the opening. With an uneven material like stone, it is likely that there will be gaps that will have to be filled in with fireplace mortar. This mortar can be purchased at a big box store.
