Spark Screen Rod Kit Adaptability to Fireplace

I was looking forward to an easy installation and solid solution with this hard-to-find kit, but I didn't count on this system to be less quality than the existing and installed version I have. Very disappointed at the quality of metal, finishing and sloppy fit for the metal rods. I kept what I had and simply bent and pulled the existing rods out of the firebox frame, and strung the new spark screens on each side. Then bent the rods back into shape. Perfect ! Except for the waste of money. I'm sure this is a fine company that offers many great items for the fireplace, but buyer beware of this particular product. My first suggestion is to purchase your new screens, then use the existing rod system. It takes strength and a little time, but is do-able and you will save money.

The Kit

It required three shipments of the kit to finally get one that could be installed. The third kit sent had proper rod thickness AND pre-bent ends so it could just be installed - be sure to ask for the pre-bent rods when you order. The plus was customer service handled each faulty product immediately, and even sent the the third kit UPS Next Day for free. Customer service gets a 5.

We are very pleased with your screen but I wish it would have come with some kind of metal facing so it would have given it more of a finished look{Brass would be nice} instead of about a1 inch gap from the top of the fireplace to the rod. Rod Kit broke

The design of the rod is flawed. It requires it to be bent at the point where it meets the wall of the fireplace enclosure and is "scored" to make this bending easier. The idea is good as it allows for a more flexible installation (can be installed in different conditions), but as a result, the scoring severely weakens the rod to the point that when I used pliers as instructed to bend the rod for installation, each end broke off! Luckily I have a metal firebox so what I did was drill holes into the sidewalls of the firebox and inserted the rod directly into the firebox walls; this supported the rod instead of the screws I would have used if the bending of the rod was successful. Had I not been able to do this, I wonder if I would have received either a refund or an exchange.If I were to order again and knew I needed to have these rods bent in order to install properly, I would have requested them to be pre-bent by Woodland Direct. I'm sure they would have done this as they seem to be a very good company.

Rod kit for Screen Curtain

The rod kit is a one-size-fits-all item. There are two rods, each of which is supported at one side of the fireplace opening and by a center-mounted bracket, where the two screens overlap slightly when closed. My screen extends across an opening of 53 inches. Because of the long span for each rod, the weight of the screen caused the rods to sag a full inch at their midpoints when the screen was closed. Perhaps there may have been a heavy duty rod kit available, but I simply bought better thicker rods at the hardware store and mounted them on the steel lintel with screw eyes. The screen itself now functions perfectly and looks beautiful, but the rod kit was considerably under-engineered for the job it had to do.

Exactly the right size!

It was so great to find a place that had the correct length. Most places only have 2" increments. The panels come with new pulls too, which was nice. I had a problem (since I don't have big muscles) getting the rings open to put them on the existing rod, even using 2 needle nose pliers. The other problem I had was that the ring ends are super sharp, so be careful. Overall, I would definitely recommend these panels though. The finer mesh is much prettier and seems safer. Good buy!!!

Installation is very difficult. I have installed other rods that clamp to the lentel (the steel plate at the top of the firebox opening). With this product is was necessary to drill holes in the bricks and use screws and anchors. This is not an easy install.

Easy to install with a fresh mortar drill bit. Installation instructions are easy to follow. But rather than just screwing the screws directly into the mortar (the screws didn't hold very well), I drilled the holes larger and used metal screw anchors that I purchased at the hardware store. The screws then fit nice and snug and are holding very well.

The smaller 1/4" fireplace screen is exactly the ticket for keeping the embers from jumping out of the fireplace, it rarely happens now since getting this new screen. I ordered this screen after my oriental rug was damaged by a wayward spark which projected pretty far into the room. I wanted something unobtrusive, since I have a brass fender around the hearth and I didn't want a screen which would detract from it. I ordered this in a size long enough to come all the way down to the bottom of the opening, and in the mini-mesh. I use the fireplace every day, and, several months on, the screen has successfully prevented any further damage to my rug.

21" Fireplace screen curtain w/standard mesh

I couldn't really use the screen curtain. After cutting 1/4" off the bottom, my wife and I hung it in the fireplace. Then took the new Thermo-Rite Thinline door frame we purchased from you and held it up in the opening only to find that the screen would not open without pushing the door frame out, there was no room for it to slide behind the new Thinline doors. So sorry to say we will be out the $50 plus $10 shipping unless we can find someone who may want to buy them from us, which may not be easy if at all possible. We will use the fireplace without the screen or get a folding one for outside the doors? The Thinline doors are Great, looks like a new fireplace, just wish would have discussed the area needed for screen before we purchased it. I have asked before, but if there is anything you can do to ease the $60.00 loss, it would be greatly appreciated. But once again, thanks for the Thinline doors! Reply appreciated. Very budget minded approach to preventing sparks. Doesn't slide open and closed very well but you don't need to do that all of the time. You should order your screen longer than the what you need to allow it to 'bunch up' and look right.

Received the kit in just a few days after on-line purchase. Website was easy to use. Instructions on how to measure fireplace and then order where easy AND correct. It fit perfectly. The "pulls" for the screen were a bit on the smallish side and felt a bit flimsy. I would recommend to a friend.

I had to return the product because it didn't fit my fireplace, but I think $40 for 2 metal rods and a of little piece of sheet metal is a little expensive. When you compare price of the screen with the rod kit, it doesn't seem to make sense. Overall, I have been very satisfied with my purchases from Woodland Direct.

Easy Installation

The screen rod kit was super easy to install. At some point after our home was built someone installed an insert in the fireplace so there were plenty of anchor points for the bracket and rod ends. All I had to do was drill 3 small holes in the sheet metal of the insert. That made installation just as easy as if there were no insert. I would rate this higher except the installation sheet that comes with the kit isn't much help.

We ordered the screen rod kit along with the fireplace screen curtains. The rod is so flimsy that when the screen is on it, it bows down. My husband is having to just make his own rod. The curtains and the brackets are OK, but did not expect the rod to not be able to hold the curtain up very well! Won't buy again.

The screen material was very nice, however the mounting brackets were very thin material. I actually reused the center bracket from my existing screen. It also came without any mounting hardware.

Fire Safety Screen

Called Woodland customer service because I couldn't find a fireplace safety screen on their website. Customer service came to my rescue by walking me through the online process, but also took my order over the phone. They were very helpful. 4 stars instead of 5 because I couldn't find the safety screen on their website. FYI - the safety screen is shown as a "spark guard curtain", which then shows what I wanted as a "Fireplace Screen Curtain". But, very good delivery and service.

Works well

We are happy with the simple screen for keeping the ashes from blowing in on a windy day. Fireplace is built exteriorly and interiorily, partially inside a sunroom.

Mini Mesh

My new fireplace screen curtain arrived the day after I ordered i! I was very pleased with the quick delivery. The mini mesh curtain is just what I wanted and there should be no more sparks popping out on the carpet. The new curtain is quite a bit heavier than the old one so the original rod is somewhat "challenged". So far it is holding up.

The mesh is great and fits and looks very well. Open the package outside. There is a ton of little black grains that will go everywhere when you open the package.

Surprisingly Easy Solution

We have 3 fireplaces that are a pre-fab type that is now obsolete and all need new curtain-type screens. Customer Service was great in advising that we would need to use existing rods for the install. Shipment arrived in 2 days. Measuring instructions were right on. Simply had to remove one screw to remove existing rod and old screen and then replace with new. With the help of a magnetic screwdriver, it was done in a few minutes. Great service and great product.

Flemsy rods

So disappointed with the light weight metal rods. The weight of the screen is too much for them. They bow and it looks terrible. The mesh should ride on a track. I don’t recommend this item.

was misinformed about the size

What I thought was 30 in. wide and 48 in. high wasn't what I received. The track is so thin a child could bend it. I am not at all happy with the products I received.

Mesh Spark Screen

I haven't installed these yet but that shod nt be a problem. Originally I ordered the wrong size. Getting approval for a return was simple and I then ordered two more in the correct size. This company is very easy to work with. Definitely 5 Stars.

Fireplace Screen Curtain

I have a wood burning fire place and needed to replace the protective screen. I was able to easily find the screen I needed on the website and ordering was simple. It arrived as ordered and fit perfectly. Will certainly order from Woodland again.

Fire Screen Replacement Kit

Ordered both screen and the rods. Very easy to install and works really well. The design is great because the screens pass each other in the middle. This overlap of the screens leaves no open space for sparks or pops to come out of the fireplace. Followed the directions on the website for measuring and it fits great.

Works well, blocks more

I bought the smaller opening version, 3/16" vs. 4/16" (1/4") as we were getting a lot of sparks going thru the 1/4" screen. I made a huge difference blocking sparks, have had only one go through in several weeks (fire every night), whereas before we would have one or 2 cinders a day pop thru. Downside is it does also block more of the heat, so it's a trade off but one I'm willing to accept.

Great fireplace screen

This was a great purchase and even though I made an error on the measurement, the company took the wrong one back and sent out the correct one right away.

Good for the Price

The wire gauge, temper, and finish are all above average for this product. The rings limit the rod size to not much more than 0.310". I would have liked to used a 3/8" tempered rod so no sagging in the middle. Overall I'm happy with it and the handles are nice.

screen length

My fireplace is 48" wide and I ordered a 48" screen. This screen is too short. The screen needs to be at least 4" longer than the opening. Eight inches would be better. Perhaps this was explained but I missed it if it was.

Works great, BUT....

This screen has turned out to be great, however, if I didn't have my dad, his tools, and trip to Home Depot I would have been lost. Things you need to make this happen: -a drill that can drill through brick. The average drill can't do this AND you need the right kind of drill bit. -you need a saw that can cut metal because you have to trim the rod. Again, not a tool I had but my dad did. -NO SCREWS CAME WITH THIS. Again, thanks to my dad for knowing what type and size screw to go get from Home Depot. My dad is super handy but 74, it took him about an hour to get it done. I am super thankful for him. I could NOT have done this without him. I would have had to buy a drill, a saw, and screws on my own AND figure it all out. Soooo... if you're handy or know someone that is handy, go for it with this product. If you're not, you might get pretty frustrated. Hope this helps!

Fire screen curtain

My screen fits perfectly, though it was difficult to install - more because I have a stone fireplace with a thick steel support across opening. However, when installed, the rods that hold the curtains bow - literally swag on both sides. Rods are obviously too flimsy for my 36” long curtain. Since rods are not black (like curtain and surrounding fireplace) it’s noticeable. The screen barely touches floor in middle of sway. Remains to be seen if that will be a problem during fire season.

Exactly as ordered

This fireplace screen arrived quickly and was cut to order exactly. Instructions were very clear and installation was easy. Make sure you have the appropriate drill bits for the material you are drilling into. Masonry bits won't like the lintel and vice versa.

Great Looking Screen

Went in easier than I thought. I purchased the screen with the hanging rods. You'll need a tape measure, level with a magnet, drill, concrete drill bit, two tapcon blue concrete anchor screws, and a self tapping screw to fix the middle support piece of the hanging rods to the inside of the lintel. The middle support comes with an L bracket to affix it to the lintel, which was nice, as it wasn't clear it would come with that. Looks great!

Nice fire curtain

I installed this curtain on the inside of our porch fireplace in about an hour. My masonry bit was a little dull. Plus, drilling through the lentil plate was not easy. I was concerned the 48” width would be too much for my 32” opening but it is perfect. It’s a very nice product and I would recommend it.
