These stylish candles were used around the turn of the century when courting was still fashionable. When a young man came to court his daughter, the father would set the candle for the desired allotment of time. When the candle burned down to the metal, time was up. Father might raise the candle higher if he saw promise in the young man, or lower it he disliked the suitor. The candle is raised and lowered using the wooden support and handle as it winds up and down the spiral.
