Adding a fire pit to your backyard or patio is one of the best ways to create a cozy, inviting outdoor living space you can enjoy year-round. Imagine settling into an outdoor couch or chair with your favorite drink next to warm, glowing flames! Whether you’re hosting friends, relaxing with family, or simply unwinding after a long day, having a fire pit makes every occasion more comfortable.
There are two different types of fire pits to choose from — wood burning and gas (natural gas or liquid propane). To make your final decision, you’ll need to factor in cost, convenience, heat output, environmental impact, and overall aesthetic.
Use this guide to weigh the pros and cons of wood and gas fire pits, so you can determine which style best fits your outdoor space and lifestyle.
Wood Fire Pits: Traditional & Rustic
Pros
🔥 Authentic Experience – It’s hard to beat the crackling sound, smoky aroma, and natural ambiance of a real wood fire. You can even cook over your wood fire pit! They’re great for quick fireside meals and of course, roasting marshmallows for s’mores.
🔥 High BTU Output – Wood fire pits burn extremely hot, making them ideal for colder climates and extended use.
🔥 Lower Upfront Cost – Purchasing a wood fire pit is generally more affordable than gas, with many DIY and portable options available.
🔥 Versatile Fuel Source – Firewood is widely available. You can use a variety of different seasoned hardwoods, like oak, maple, pine, elm, and hickory.
Cons
❌ More Maintenance – Ash and soot require regular cleanup, and firewood needs proper storage to stay dry. Consider stacking your logs on a firewood rack to keep them organized, dry, and ready to burn.
❌ Smoke & Sparks – While the scent and sounds of burning logs is appealing to many, wood fire pits produce smoke and stray embers, which can create a fire hazard in windy conditions.
❌ Longer Start-Up & Cool-Down – Wood fires take time to build and extinguish properly.
❌ Restricted Use – Some urban areas have fire bans or restrictions on wood burning fire pits due to air quality concerns.
Wood Fire Pits are Best For:
- People who enjoy a classic campfire feel.
- Homeowners with ample outdoor space and proper fire safety clearance.
- Those who don’t mind extra maintenance for a more traditional experience.

Gas Fire Pits: Modern & Convenient
Pros
🔥 Instant Ignition – With the push of a button or turn of a knob, gas fire pits provide immediate flames and heat. Some gas fire pits even offer convenient, electronic ignition systems with hand-held remotes and smart controls.
🔥 Clean Burning – Gas fire pits don’t produce any smoke, ash, or soot, making for a mess-free, low-maintenance experience.
🔥 Variety of Designs – You can choose from an array of styles to match your space and lifestyle — including fire pit tables for extra functionality. You can also upgrade your gas fire pit with different media, like decorative stones and fire glass, for a custom burning display.
🔥 Safer & More Controlled – Unlike wood burning fire pits, gas models don't produce any flying embers, and you can easily adjust the flame intensity.
Cons
❌ Higher Upfront Cost – Gas fire pits, especially those requiring a Natural Gas hookup, are more expensive to install than wood fire pits.
❌ Fuel Supply Dependency – Propane tanks need refilling and Natural Gas requires a fixed connection, limiting your fire pit’s portability.
❌ Potential Gas Leaks – It’s important to make sure all the parts of your gas fire pit are operating correctly, otherwise you could experience a dangerous gas leak. You’ll need to clean and inspect your fire pit regularly.
Gas Fire Pits are Best For:
- Those who prioritize convenience and easy maintenance.
- Urban dwellers with fire restrictions on wood burning who need a smokeless fire pit that’s more eco-friendly.
- People who prefer a sleek, modern aesthetic to match their landscaping.

Making the Final Decision
When choosing between a wood or gas fire pit, consider the following:
✅ Do you prioritize convenience over authenticity? Gas fire pits are easier to use, while wood burning models provide a more natural experience.
✅ How much heat do you need? Wood fires burn hotter, making them better for colder regions.
✅ What’s your budget? Wood fire pits are generally cheaper upfront, while gas options require more investment but lower long-term maintenance.
✅ Are there local fire regulations? Some areas ban wood burning fire pits, making gas the only legal option.
✅ How much maintenance are you willing to do? If you dislike cleaning ash or chopping wood, gas is the hassle-free choice.
FAQs
It all comes down to your personal preference.
Natural gas fire pits are often permanent outdoor fixtures, connected to a natural gas line. They require professional installation, which makes them more expensive upfront. However, operating costs are reasonable. Your natural gas fire pit will constantly receive a steady flow of a fuel and you won’t have to worry about swapping out a propane tank.
Propane fire pits offer more flexibility and portability. You can DIY most propane setups, simply connecting a standard tank to your gas fire pit. Some propane fire pits also have hidden tank storage, allowing you to store your fuel in the base for streamlined style.
Typically, you can safely install a gas fire pit on wood decks. You’ll need to hire a professional for the setup, check the manufacturer requirements, and confirm your city’s codes before installation.
Wood fire pits are not safe on a wooden, composite, or vinyl deck, unless it has been approved by the manufacturer and your city code. You'll also need to place it on top of a non-combustible base or high-temperature fire pit mat that extends out at least 24 inches. Most homeowners opt for concrete pavers or natural stone slabs.
