Distinctly original, this Pennsylvania Firebacks Night Horse Cast Iron Fireback is an ideal addition to a hearth on the ranch. The unique, curving frame topped with rope moulding charmingly sets off the picture of a cantering horse below the crescent moon. The brisk but easy movement of the horse creates a sense of movement in this piece.
Once the decision has been made to purchase a fireback for your hearth, one must take into consideration the space available and aesthetics you want to achieve. A fireback should be wide enough to shield the hearth wall directly behind the fire. Remember that it is not uncommon for there to be anywhere from 3 inches to 10 inches of exposed back wall on either side of a fireback. The top of the fireback must be below the opening of the flue. Firebacks are shipped with a water base black paint to prevent rust build up during transit. To give a brighter finish to the fireback and to protect the casting from rust after use with a fire, an application of water base graphite stove polish is recommended. Applied with a toothbrush or rag, this paste, when dry, can be polished with a wire brush or rag giving the fireback an attractive silverfish sheen.

Horse firebacks
Beautiful when the flames light up the horse. Very heavy. Very pleased with the purchase
Preliminary Fireback Review
On an aesthetic level, I have to say that the fireback looks beautiful. Of course right now with temps from the 90's to the 100+ degrees I can't use it! But I will this winter and will follow directions for getting it slowly used to smaller fires for the first three or so times. From what I looked over, it is a well made product. I also got shoes to hold it in place. So far it's an A+ rating!
Great....but
Love the fireback... Perfect for our horse farm. EXCEPT that it is just too small. I purchased the iron stands...but even placing the fireback on the top was just not large enough. Our fire place is just an average gas log one. Needed to be about 5 inches taller and 2 wider. But it is quite lovely.
